The Miami-Dade Public Library System kicks-off its Summer Reading Program on Saturday, June 11 at several branches throughout the County. The program, which continues through July 23, encourages children and teens to read for two or more hours each week to qualify to win one of many Grand Prizes. These prizes include a Miami Dolphins VIP Training Camp Experience; a Miami Dolphins VIP Game-Day Experience; Miami Dolphins Memorabilia; and gift cards to Barnes and Noble, Gamestop, Best Buy and Toys ‘R Us, among many others.

2011 Summer Food Service Program

Miami-Dade Community Action Agency (CAA) will provide meals to children at program sites throughout Miami-Dade County, as part of the 2011 Summer Food Service Program. The Program will operate from June 13, 2011 through August 12, 2011. Nutritionally balanced meals will be provided to all children regardless of race, color, sex, disability, age, or national origin during summer vacation when school breakfasts and lunches are not available. All children 18 years old and younger are eligible for meals at open sites at no cost. It is the policy of Miami-Dade County that all children will be served without discrimination. The program sites are only approved in geographical areas where 50 percent or more of the children qualify for free and reduced price meals during the school year.

Program sites are located throughout Miami-Dade County in recreational centers, summer camps, churches, and community based organizations that provide services to children during the summer recess. A list of the participating distribution sites is available to be downloaded from the Miami-Dade County web portal at www.miamidade.gov/caa

SIlver Knight Award

It's time to congratulate Senior Amanda Dilella. She was recognized by the Miami Herald and awarded the Silver Knight Honorable Mention in Journalism. The Miami Herald's Silver Knight Award recognizes students for their academic achievement as well as community service. Amanda has raised thousands of dollars for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Additionally, she has been a counselor, mentor and spokesperson for the organization.

This is the 4th time in Varela history that a student in the Communications Academy receives one of these prestigious awards.

John S. Martinez Leadership Scholarship

The National Hispanic Caucus for State Legislators (NHCSL) is proud to announce the John S. Martinez Leadership Scholarship NHCSL – . The NHCSL Scholarship program is specifically designed to help Hispanic high school students achieve educational success. We hope this initiative can help curb the achievement gap by offering an opportunity to students who may not have the financial resources to continue their studies. Varela's Veterinary Science Magnet Academy

AgDiscovery is an outreach program to help students learn about careers in animal science, veterinary medicine, agribusiness and plant pathology. This 2-3 week program allows participants to live on a college campus and learn about Agricultural science from university professors, practicing veterinarians and professionals working for the U.S. Government. Students chosen to participate in AgDiscovery will gain experience through hands-on labs, workshops, field trips and other group and team building activities.

Each year, the Woman’s History Coalition of Miami-Dade recognizes six women that have made major contributions to the South Florida communities.

To recognize the 2011 honorees, the Woman’s History Coalition of Miami-Dade is sponsoring an essay contest to provide one (1) woman student that plans to study government, civics, or social services with a $1,000 scholarship.

The Florida State Thespian Festival was held in Tampa last week.Varela thespian troupe received 6 straight superior ratings in all categories of performance and a CRITIC’S CHOICE for Solo Musical meaning the best ranked Solo Musical in the State of Florida out of over 300 participants in that category. (The highest honor that can be bestowed on a performance at State.)

Dorothy Strachan Sawyer Scholarship

Dorothy Strachan Sawyer was a dedicated educator in the Miami-Dade County Public School System. She served in all major offices in local Delta chapters and served a full term as an officer at the National level. She was a Charter Member of Dade County Alumnae Chapter and it is to her honor that this scholarship is dedicated. The Dorothy Strachan Sawyer Scholarship has been established to enhance higher learning of African American graduating high school females in the Miami-Dade County community. The scholarship targets average academic performance. It is specifically designed for the C-8 student who has performed or provided service to the community while performing at a maximum effort level during her high school years, but because of average academic performance, most likely will not receive scholarship assistance.

The scholarship shall be in the amount of $5,000 annually.
The funds shall be used for scholarships only.
One recipient shall receive the scholarship for four years providing she continues to matriculate and maintains at least a 2.75 GPA on a 4.0 grading scale or a 1.75 GPA on a 3.0 grading scale.
The recipient must submit an official, sealed copy of her transcript to Dade County Alumnae at the end of each of the first 3 years in order to establish eligibility for the succeeding year.
The scholarship cycle for each recipient ends at the end of the four (4) year period.

The Dorothy Strachan Sawyer Scholarship shall not take the place of the sorority's annual scholarships already in existence and shall be given in addition to these scholarships.

Recipients of the Dorothy Strachan Sawyer Scholarship shall not be family members of sorors of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Should extenuating circumstances arise with a scholarship reCipient that causes a break in her matriculation; the Dorothy Strachan Sawyer Scholarship Committee will make a recommendation to the chapter for the continuation or termination of the scholarship.

The Dorothy Strachan Sawyer Scholarship shall be given in her honor as long as funds are available.

Tau Kappa Epsilon Scholarship - male students attending UF

Tau Kappa Epsilon, founded in 1899, is the largest and most successful International social fraternity. The Gamma Theta Chapter began at the University of Florida in 1953 and has since been an active member on campus and in the greek community. The Gamma Theta Chapter of the Tau Kappa Epsilon is proud to announce its first annual Triangle Achievement Awards.

There will be four scholarships awarded to male high school seniors who are attending the University of Florida in either the summer or fall terms of2011. Applicants must submit a photograph and high school transcript, and the awards are as follows:

First place: $750 Second place: $500 Third place: $250 Fourth place: $100
Tau Kappa Epsilon will judge applicants without regard to race, creed, religion, or national origin. The Triangle Achievement candidates will be evaluated upon three criterions: academic success, extracurricular involvement, and involvement in their local community. These areas make up the foundation of the traditions of our fraternity.

Our chapter will hold the Triangle Achievement Banquet on June 12th, 2011 for the finalists. Finalists will be notified via email at the end of May and award winners will be notified by mid-August. In addition, the winners will incur no obligation to our organization.

American Dream Scholarship

An American Dream come true...

A college education is crucial to the futures of thousands of students, but many wonder how they can ever afford to pay for it. Through the American Dream Scholarship, Miami Dade College can make the dream of higher education a reality.
Through this program, the College covers in-state tuition for two years of courses (60 college-level credits) for all Miami-Dade high school graduates who qualify. The American Dream Scholarship is a vital safety net that picks up where other aid and scholarships leave off, ensuring that bright, qualified students have the means to continue their education.

How it works:

Simply meet the requirements, and you will be awarded an American Dream Scholarship (ADS), which will pay for 60 college-level credits at Miami Dade College. No separate application is required. The scholarship covers all tuition and class fees remaining after all other scholarships and financial aid have been applied. It pays only tuition and class fees, and is not disbursable in cash.

To receive the American Dream Scholarship, you must:
• Submit all materials by the Aug. 1, 2011 deadline
• Currently reside in Miami-Dade County
• Have earned a standard high school diploma or equivalent in Miami Dade County
• Have a cumulative high school weighted GPA of 3.00 or above

FIU Mock Trail Finals

FIU Mock Trial Finals were held on March 18th. The Felix Varela Senior High School students recieved First Place in the competition. The students (eight in total) and Dr. Vichot, the law teacher at Varela spent Spring Break at FIU. They worked on the case Monday and Tuesday, and competed Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The FIU Third Year Law Students worked with them on the case.

NACOPRW Scholarship Award

The National Conference of Puerto Rican Women (NACOPRW) is honored to present the NACOPRW Scholarship Award to students who have demonstrated academic achievement. The annual scholarship will be awarded to qualified students in the amount of approximately one thousand dollars ($1,000) each in May of 2011.

Recipients for this award will be selected from applicants who meet the following criteria:

Mas Family Scholarship Program

OBJECTIVES OF THE MAS FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP

To further the education of talented young men and women with leadership potential who, as future leaders in their professional fields, will advance the cause of a free society of responsible individuals, based on the principles and ideals of a democratic, free enterprise society.

The Mas Family, and The Jorge Mas Canosa Freedom Foundation - which manages the funds - are committed to these principles; they are eloquent examples of what citizens can achieve in a free society both as individuals and as members of voluntary associations. Through the Mas Family Scholarships, the members of the Mas Family are passing on to others some of the blessings which they received as the fruits of their labors in a free society.

The Mas Family Scholarship program, which is funded by the interest generated from a multi-million dollar donation by the Mas family in 1997, is currently the largest scholarship program for Cuban-American students in the country.

TYPES OF SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

Undergraduate and Graduate scholarships are available in the fields of Engineering, Business, International Relations, Economics, Communications, and Journalism. Due to a growing number of students pursuing other majors than those listed above, the Mas Family Scholarship program WILL accept applications from all students of Cuban descent regardless of what field of study they choose.

SELECTION PROCESS

Awards are based on the recipient's academic performance, leadership qualities, potential to contribute to the advancement of a free society, and likelihood of succeeding in the student's chosen career. Each applicant will be evaluated through a two step selection process consisting of: 1.) a preliminary screening committee will analyze and confirm the student's credential (academic standing, grades, financial needs, etc.) and will select a pool of finalists; 2.) a selection committee will make the final determination based on written essays and on character evaluations.

AMOUNT OF AWARD

The amount of the award will depend on the cost of tuition at the recipient's institution, on his or her family's financial situation, as well as on the amount of funds received by the recipient from other sources. Full scholarships cannot be awarded to students who will be receiving full-tuition scholarships and/or stipendiary support from other sources, although such students are still eligible for partial awards. The Mas Family Scholarships are awarded for one year and all students are eligible to reapply in subsequent years. Those who have already received awards and have maintained a high level of performance will be given preference over new applicants.

Exxon Mobil Bernard Harris Math and Science Scholarship

The Council of the Great City Schools is pleased to announce the second year of the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Math and Science Scholarships. This scholarship is funded by ExxonMobil and is for 2011 graduating high school seniors in school districts represented by the Council of the Great City Schools. Cypress Bay boys’ soccer team wins Class 6A state title

Cypress Bay celebrated its first state championship on the field, completing the weekend sweep for all three Broward teams in Tampa. The Lightning (20-3-1) also got some revenge for its 2008 loss in the state championship game to Varela (21-4-3).

For the Vipers, it was a night where they came so close, so often.

They had the better chances for most of the first half, and a Varela player hit the post just seconds after Williams’ strike gave Cypress Bay the lead.

Varela earned a corner kick with less than two minutes remaining, and the desperate Vipers tried pulling Lewis past the midfield line to use his 6-3 frame to get a head on the ball.

“At that point in time, you’ve got to go for it,” Varela coach J.C. Gonzalez said. “We didn’t come here to sit back and relax. We wanted to come out and give them a fight.”

The teams spent the first 20 minutes feeling each other out, but the action intensified after the first-half water break.

The Vipers struck first when captain Alvaro Acosta ran down the left sideline and sent a perfect cross into the penalty box. Diego Hurtado was on the other end of it, heading the ball past a helpless Zach Biggs for a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute.

Cypress Bay didn’t stay down for long. The Lightning scored its first goal just four minutes later.

Carlos Vargas took a pass from a teammate, and the pass drew defenders to him. Vargas immediately dished the ball to Humberto Diaz with the outside of his left foot. With no one remaining to cover Diaz, the sophomore had plenty of time to strike the ball into the back of the net and tie the match.

That is when the Lightning’s depth started to show, even with the missing players. Todeschini injured his right ankle in practice in the week leading up to the state tournament, and when he couldn’t sprint before either game, Williams got the call.

Similarly, Javier Clavijo seamlessly replaced Granitto, who spent the week in Phoenix training with the U.S. under-18 national team.

“Tommy is like the whole midfield,” Vargas said. “But everybody played amazing. Everybody stepped up.”

Varela’s season ended just short of the school’s third title, but Gonzalez was still proud of what his team accomplished.

“Once we picked the team, I told them there was something here,” Gonzalez said.

“I knew we had a great team that could take us to the final. The boys played their hearts out. We reached where we wanted to reach and, unfortunately, you’ve got to have a little luck. [Cypress Bay] got that little luck.”

Varela Boys Soccer Clinches Berth in Class 6A final

TAMPA -- Alejandro Rodriguez missed one of the easiest shots in soccer – a penalty kick – in the 17th minute.

The Varela senior forward won’t have to replay the miss in his dreams after all.

Rodriguez got redemption in the form of a 67th-minute goal from a much more difficult angle, powering his Vipers to a 2-1 win against Port Orange Spruce Creek in a Class 6A state semifinal in Pepin Stadium on Friday afternoon.

“Everyone makes mistakes,” Rodriguez said. “What makes a difference is the mental toughness – the way you bounce back from things.”

Varela dominated possession and had a wealth of chances to score, but despite their better play the Vipers (21-3-3) found themselves tied at 1-1 when the Hawks (26-5-1) capitalized on their first shot.

The match didn’t stay tied for long.

Eight minutes after Hawks forward Jagger Lieb tied the game, Rodriguez showed his mental toughness when he scored the game-winner.

Rodriguez took a pass from Simon Rodriguez, cut toward the net, moved a couple yards out of the end line and gave himself just enough of an angle to shoot.

The ball went high over Hawks goalie Roshan Patel’s arms, and the Vipers had their winning goal.

“One of the things that we talked about was these are the kinds of games where you are going to make mistakes,” Vipers coach J.C. Gonzalez said. “I told the guys that we had plenty of time, we had the momentum in the game. I was confident.”

The Vipers now get their chance to win the school’s first state title since 2008. They will play either Weston Cypress Bay or Clearwater Countryside in the championship game Saturday at 7:05 p.m.

Early on, never appeared in doubt. Varela barely let Spruce Creek into an attacking position, and a penalty kick before the first-half water break seemed to validate the Vipers’ superiority.

Diego Hurtado took a shot that Spruce Creek’s Tyler Kameh handled inside the penalty box, but Alejandro Rodriguez’s slow shot to the right was saved by Patel.

But three minutes into the second half, Varela finally made good on their efforts thanks to a rocket of a shot by David Cuervo. The senior, with only two goals on the year, fired a blast into Patel’s arm.

Patel got enough on the ball to slow it down, but the momentum still carried it slowly into the net off the left post.

“[Cuervo’s] got the hardest shot you’ve ever seen,” Gonzalez said. “All season long we tried to set him up, and it hasn’t happened. When he hit that ball today, we were like, ‘Wow, he finally got it on frame.’ The keeper was all over it, but that was such a hard shot.”

A foul just 25 yards from the Vipers’ net set up Spruce Creek’s goal.

Lieb took the free kick around the left side of the four-man wall and hooked the ball right inside the left post. Varela keeper Damian Lewis stood and watched the ball fly past him into the twine.

“He was set up for a right-footed kick, and he changed it to a left,” Lewis said. “I wasn’t expecting that shot.”

The Wolfson Campus of Miami Dade College received $2.4 million from the U.S. Department
of Education’s Strengthening Institution—Hispanic Serving Institutions Program to implement a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) program.

The overall goal of the grant is to attract Hispanic students to STEM degree programs. To accomplish this, the college will open a center for Hispanic students with declared STEM majors to deliver retention, transition and career services. The College will create a summer STEM program for younger, first-time-in-college Hispanic students with interest in STEM fields. How did Varela become an A

Lately I have been asked many times what we did to be an "A" school. My predicament is how to limit my words. We are Vipers and as a community we know that Varela is not just that high school in the middle of West Kendall by Target and Walmart, but it is a place where the love of learning and the desire to make children believe in themselves is the heart beat of the school.

What magic formula did we follow ? My answer is a simple one: we worked together and we worked HARD! We did what every high school did, we adopted district initiatives in Reading, Math , Writing and Science and opened Reading labs, created "pull out's" and "push in's" and implemented focus calendars and crunch time materials. We did this together and committed ourselves to this quest Varela-style. Teachers came in on Saturdays to facilitate workshops, students spent endless hours attending after school tutoring, and the first ever FCAT pep rally was organized where the entire administrative team donned green wigs as a challenge to students to reach for the "A". Data became the language of the day- data chats with students, with the administration were held. Each administrator adopted an AYP group. Students stayed after school, came in before school, attended Saturday sessions, and kept at it and the results has been simply wonderful ! No stone was left unturned and no detail was ignored.

We are an "A" school and as Henry David Thoreau stated many decades ago. "Do not worry if you built your castle in the air. They are where they should be. Now put the foundations under them." That is what we did at Varela, we dreamt of becoming an "A" and we laid the foundations underneath that dream. On December 7th, our dream came true !!

Last school year, Varela's principal, Ms. Connie Navarro challenged the students to work hard on the FCAT. She promised that if the school was rated an A she would dye her hair green ! On December 15th the State Department of Education released the school grades.

The 2011--12 Initial Student Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA) is available online since December 1, 2010. The Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA) website at www.FloridaStudentFinancialAid.org provides the FFAA to students seeking state scholarship and grant awards for the 2011-12 postsecondary academic year.

If any 2010-11 high school graduating student applied for state-funded programs using last year's 2010-11 FFAA, the student will need to reapply using the correct application (2011-12) beginning December 1, 2010.

Steps Students Should Take to Complete the Application Process:

• Select State Grants, Scholarships & Applications and Apply Here to complete and submit an online application.

• Select Programs Offered to view detailed state programs information.

• Pay attention to program deadlines listed in the application conditions section, in the application results screen, and the application acknowledgement communication, sent to the student’s e-mail address provided by the student on his/her application.

• Watch for official e-mail acknowledgement communication, which provides each student with instructions for obtaining a USER ID and PIN to access the submitted application, update information on the application, check the status of the application, and view notifications online.

Do you know.... any academically strong high school students with great leadership potential?

LEAD is currently accepting applications for three summer programs: LEAD Business, LEAD Engineering, and LEAD Global.

LEAD Business (SBI): Available for high school juniors with a 3.0 GPA or better who are involved in their schools and communities. Participating universities include: Dartmouth College, Duke University, Northwestern University, Stanford University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania and the University of Virginia. SBIs are 3 to 4 week residential programs that immerse participants in a range of topics from finance and marketing, to e-commerce and entrepreneurship. Application deadline is January 25, 2011.

LEAD Engineering (SEI): Available for high school sophomores and juniors with a 3.2 GPA or better who show great interest in mathematics and the sciences.

Participating universities include California Institute of Technology, University of California, Berkeley, University of Michigan, Villanova University, Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Virginia. The SEI curriculum focuses on areas of engineering including electrical, mechanical, civil, computer and civil engineering; associated disciplines such as chemical, biotech, biomolecular, materials science, aerospace, polymer-textile/fiber and technological systems are also studied. Application deadline is January 25, 2011.

LEAD Global (SGI): Available for high school sophomores with a 3.0 GPA who are ready to live and study abroad. The Global program exposes American students to global career opportunities alongside peers from different countries in one program so that all participants might make better informed decisions when choosing a college or profession. LEAD Global will take place in Cape Town, South Africa at the University of Cape Town. Application deadline is January 25, 2011.

MITES (Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science) is a rigorous six-week residential, academic enrichment summer program for promising high school juniors who are interested in studying and exploring careers in science and engineering.
All individuals who are selected must be US citizens or permanent residents, and must demonstrate bright promise of ability and interest in science, engineering and technology. Additionally, they must demonstrate that they would benefit from and contribute to the program. These factors are assessed based on all or some combination of grades, PSAT, SAT or ACT test scores, extracurricular activities, essays and letters of recommendation.

SAMS: The Summer Academy for Mathematics and Science at Carnegie Mellon University

The Summer Academy for Mathematics and Science is a rigorous residential summer experience for good students who have a strong interest in math and science and want to become excellent students. Students who are entering their junior or senior year and are considering careers in engineering, science and other math-based disciplines are eligible to apply. Students must be at least 15 years old to participate in this program. The program will focus on creating interest in technical disciplines and building academic and personal skills to better prepare you for the college application process. Deadline is April 1st, 2011.FREE! There will be no tuition, housing or dining fees for students selected to attend SAMS. Students will, however, be responsible for books, supplies, transportation and recreational expenses. Textbook costs vary from year to year. An estimate would be $150-$200.

2011 UF Young Entrepreneurs for Leadership & Sustainability Summer Program

This program is for motivated, college-bound high school sophomores and juniors who are interested in Entrepreneurship, Social Entrepreneurship, Leadership, and Sustainability. Applicants should be successfully pursuing a rigorous high school curriculum as demonstrated by their transcripts.

SOUTH FLORIDA - Local Hispanic and African-American graduating high school seniors can now find their road to success with Ronald McDonald House Charities®/Hispanic American Commitment to Educational Resources (RMHC/HACER) and the RMHC/African-American Future Achievers scholarship programs. Additionally, RMHC will offer two scholarships to outstanding students regardless of race, color, creed, religion, gender, disability or national origin.

A total of 20 scholarships will be awarded in 2011. Scholarship awards are $2,000 each and are designated for graduating high school seniors. Also, through the support of the McDonald’s Hispanic Operator Association four RMHC/HACER national scholarships will be awarded. These new awards will be awarded to four students selected from the national pool of RMHC/HACER applicants. Each scholarship will total $100,000 payable over 4 years.

Eligible candidates must meet the following criteria:

§ RMHC/HACER Scholarship: Must have at least one parent of Hispanic origin

Band of Mystery

The Felix Varela Band of Mystery went to Tampa, Florida this weekend to perform on Saturday 11/20/2010 at State Championships and accomplished many great things.

They won the Semi-Final event and were awarded Best Music and Best Percussion. I am honored by those awards which designate our program as having the highest level of music performing in our class in the State Competitive Circuit. This means our kiddies can play their instruments well and are able to perform literature at a high level.

The success at Semi-Finals Qualified the Band program for Finals that night at the Tropicana Dome in Tampa, Florida. This was the first time in the school's history that our band program makes it to Finals. Many spectators and schools were cheering for our Band of Mystery, as well as ALL of the other Miami-Dade Bands. Only 2 bands from Miami made it to Finals and Varela was one of them. At finals the students performed very well and ended up in third place for the State, even after some of our percussion instruments fell apart marching onto the field. This is all amazing when you consider there are hundreds of bands in Florida and our little band is one of the top ones.

 MDC’s admission application fee has been increased from $20 to $30 as of October 18, 2010.

 Students will be charged a $3 per credit beginning in the fall of 2011. This “access and parking” fee will automatically be included with tuition. For instance, a student taking 12 credits will be charged $36 that semester. All parking and access fees will go toward construction, the hiring of public safety patrols, parking attendants and operational expenses college wide.

 The Miami Culinary Institute, the first public program of its kind in South Florida will open its door in January, 2011. The eight-story building located at the Wolfson Campus includes a state-of-the-art food and wine demonstration kitchen, three floors of kitchen laboratories and fine dining restaurant overlooking the port of Miami.  New program for quicker degrees: The Wolfson Campus initiated two programs that will allow student to earn their associate degree in one year! Tracks are offered in information technology and business administration. The program is comprised of four-week classes, rather than the traditional 16 weeks. All the classes are mapped out before so that students completely understand and are fully aware of their responsibilities. This past Saturday October 25, 2010 the Band of Mystery performed in competition at the Hialeah Showcase of Champions. Our band students performed extremely well.

Not only did they accomplish all of these great achievements, but they also were awarded first runner up in the evening with a score of 86.00. This is an amazing accomplishment considering that the one group ahead of them is about three times the size of ours. This score of 86.00 is the highest score in Varela history and places us first overall in our county over all schools and first in the state in our class.

Our students are Network Champions for the district!!

In district-wide Cisco Networking competitions, two of our students took First Place:

Robert Cyr – Network Cabling

Mario Martinez – Network Design

These young men even beat out two technology magnet schools: Miami Lakes Technical Center and Miami Central.

Both men performed admirably. Robert was the first student who completed the cabling project without any errors. He demonstrated focus and confidence as he swept the competition. Mario’s network design impressed the judges, two of which were Cisco engineers. The engineers made a point of stating that Mario’s solution was even better than their own, and they used Mario’s solution as the answer key for the rest of the competition. They are even considering an internship for Mario – something Cisco does not normally do.

If you see Robert or Mario, please give them a big CONGRATS! There were absolutely amazing.

And Varela, once again, shows off our excellent networking program. We are small, but mighty!!!!

Varela Boys Volleyball

The Varela boys volleyball team picked up a major playoff victory against the second seed Westminster Warriors. The Vipers were led by hall of famer Roger Garcia who completely took over the game. He not only led the teams in kills but he also played a new role as setter. Not many people could change roles like that at the end of a season and still dominate. Kevin Vivanco and Billy Baez also came up with big stats to lead the vipers to the district championship tonight versus the Palmetto Panthers @7:00 @ Coral reef.

West Kendall Students host prom for senior citizens

A group of South Miami-Dade high school students spent a recent Saturday giving new meaning to the term ``senior prom.''

The Key Club at Felix Varela Senior High School in West Kendall hosted a senior citizen's prom earlier this month for residents of the nearby Coral Reef Senior Nursing home, 9869 SW 152nd Ter.

Seniors at the prom played alphabet bingo and dice games that included prizes like socks, candles and playing cards.

Key Club president Sanah Faroke, a senior at Varela High, said the prom was her idea and a fun way to do something that benefits the community.

``One reason the Key Club created this prom is to aid those who need a little sunshine in their lives and to show that there is still kindness in the world,'' Sanah said.

Key Club members Ena Marie Montero and Alissa Alayeto wowed the crowd with their own rendition of Lee Ann Womack's I Hope You Dance.

Among the 30 senior citizens at the prom, all in wheelchairs, sat author John Holman, who published a book that chronicles his fight with cerebral palsy and how he hasn't been able to speak for several years.

Because Holman cannot talk, he designed a communication board with common words so that he can convey messages to the public.

Holman sat front and center listening attentively to Ena Marie and Alissa's performance. He pointed out the words: THIS-IS-GREAT.

Dorothy ``Dot'' Keim, 86, was crowned prom queen. She said the song reminded her of her dancing days when she was a young woman living in New York.

``I used to go dancing with my husband all the time,'' she said. ``He loved to dance, and he was the cutest man: tall, dark hair, light eyes. We'd dance to all kinds of music, I loved it.''

Betty Patterson, 69, who has lived at the nursing home for about two months, said her favorite part of the prom was the raffle, in which she won a prize she thinks was tailor-made for her.

``I love ballet, and I won a ballerina figurine,'' Patterson said. ``I'm really glad these students came out here and did this for us.''

Janice Lewis, a science teacher and advisor of the school's Key Club, also works as a sponsor for the international organization. She said the club benefits the community at large and that the students have a lot to gain, as well.

``Our club is primarily based on being a servant to the community,'' Lewis said. ``But we also expose out students to etiquette, how to get jobs and how to represent themselves.''

Key Club International is the oldest and largest service program for high school students, boasting approximately 250,000 members and representing 30 countries.

Each Key Club member pays an annual fee of $15. Varela's Key Club currently has 40 paying members.

Lewis says she is hoping to expand that number.

``My job is so wonderful because I get to cater to the needs of each individual student,'' Lewis said. ``A lot of students don't understand how important it is to get on the right track early.''

Some of our ESOL kids traveled to Washington DC last week. A couple of them have been in this country for just 8 months.

They were lucky enough to have met with Congressman Mario Diaz Balart were able to ask him questions and share their opinions. They participated in workshops about immigration, education, and other interesting topics and they visited the White House, The Capitol, and many museums. They did a great job there and learned a lot about the government and the election process.

If you have Jonathan and Steffan Blanco, Jose Vila, David Romero, Daniela Suarez, and Daniela Sequeira, please, give them a pat on their backs. They were amazing!

NAACP ACT- SO Competition

Students from Varela attended the NAACP ACT-SO competition on April 17, 2010. We have one first place winner in the Humanities category of essay writing. Natalie Taillepierre will be going on to Kansas to the National ACT-SO Competition in July.

We have second place winners in Humanities category of playwriting (Marla Hector) and poetry (Christine Louis).

In Performing Arts category of oratory, we placed second (Marla Hector) and third (Anase Frazier).
The students that placed in their categories will be honored at an awards ceremony in May.

The Producers is a musical adapted by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan from Brooks' 1968 film of the same name, with lyrics by Brooks and music by Brooks and Glen Kelly. As in the film, the story concerns two theatrical producers who scheme to get rich by overselling interests in a Broadway flop. Complications arise when the show unexpectedly turns out to be successful. The humor of the show is accessible to a wide range of audiences, and draws on ridiculous accents, caricatures of homosexuals and Nazis, and many show business in-jokes.

Lida Esfendairy and Lais Marrero won #1 doubles with Jessica Escobar and Tina Esfendairy winning their #2 doubles. The win improves their record to 12-1 and sets up a regional finals match tomorrow for a trip to the State Finals.

Congressional Nominations

The application process is now open for students interested in obtaining a Congressional nomination to one of the United States Service Academies for the class entering in the summer of 2010. The academies include the Military Academy at West Point, NY, the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs CO, the Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD, the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY.

The Coast Guard Academy at New London, CT, does not require a congressional nomination for appointment.

Academy application packets from U.S. Senator Bill Nelson can be accessed online at http://billnelson.senate.gov now through September 24, 2010.

Free Travel for Students

Southwest Airlines and HACU Open Travel Program for Students

Southwest Airlines offers an education travel award program. Each student is eligible to receive 1 – 4 tickets for use by the student or immediate family to travel to/from a college or university. The tickets are awarded to undergraduate and graduate Hispanic students with socio-economic needs who journey away from home to pursue higher education. All of the participants must submit an essay explaining why they deserve the travel award and what inspires them to pursue a college degree.

Online applications will be accepted through April 30, 2010, at HACU website.
