The Producers at Varela

Felix Varela Senior High School

Presents: THE PRODUCERS

April 20, 21, 22
Tickets are $7
Showtime: 7:00 PM
Rated PG-13

The Producers is a musical adapted by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan from Brooks' 1968 film of the same name, with lyrics by Brooks and music by Brooks and Glen Kelly. As in the film, the story concerns two theatrical producers who scheme to get rich by overselling interests in a Broadway flop. Complications arise when the show unexpectedly turns out to be successful. The humor of the show is accessible to a wide range of audiences, and draws on ridiculous accents, caricatures of homosexuals and Nazis, and many show business in-jokes.

Tennis News

The Varela girls’ tennis team won their regional semi final match against Killian yesterday 5-2. Jessica Escobar, Tina Esfendairy, and Abi Lelis all won their singles’ matches. Lida Esfendairy and Lais Marrero won #1 doubles with Jessica Escobar and Tina Esfendairy winning their #2 doubles. The win improves their record to 12-1 and sets up a regional finals match tomorrow for a trip to the State Finals.

The Miami Posse

The Posse Miami nomination process is now open. If you know of any students who are leaders in the school and community, committed to their education, demonstrate academic potential, interested in teamwork and diversity and are positive, motivated, talented, ambitious young people please refer them to Ms. Clara Gonzalez, CAP advisor.

Fifteen juniors will be nominated to participate in the Posse.

The Posse Foundation identifies public high school students with extraordinary academic and leadership potential who may be overlooked by traditional college selection process.

All nominees must:

Be high school seniors in the fall of 2010

Demonstrate extraordinary leadership within their high school, community, or family

Excel academically and have strong GPAs. Although there is no minimum requirement, only nominees who have consistently progressed toward academic excellence will be given the opportunity to be a Posse Scholar. While the ACT and SAT are not a focus of Posse’s evaluation, students should take both tests and do their best.

The participating colleges/universities this year are Mount Holyoke and Hamilton College offering full-tuition scholarships and the University of Pennsylvania offering a leadership award equal to 100 percent of their determined financial need. The foundation is looking for more colleges and universities to be added for the upcoming year.
